What makes Hana-Saku Iroha work so well from the outset is the way it tweaks all the usual teenage clichés—parental figures actually declare their intention to leave instead of being assumed nonexistent; the heroine takes matters into her own hands instead of being forced to move; even a standard confession of love comes with its own particular charm. And the characters themselves, with their carefully animated expressions and gestures, feel like genuine people with thoughts and feelings, not the stock anime stereotypes that show up all too often.

Even the scenery seems to have a life of its own—the sunset reflecting off steel and glass in the city when Ohana contemplates her predictable future, the picturesque greens and blues as she takes the train ride out to escape that future, and the views from the grounds of the inn itself, reminding us that there are still oases of nature-filled beauty in the modern world.

And as this thoughtful episode points out, sometimes poison water lurks at the bottom of the oasis.

If you must have one reason to buy the third Galaxy Angel Rune DVD, let it be Aya Hirano. No, not because of her voice acting—one could watch any anime made in the last five years for that—but because of the bonus short film where she acts out a poignant slice-of-life moment. After all, the mere sight of Hirano's celestial beauty is enough to bring all true believers to their knees, and how many other anime DVDs can you buy that include a live-action clip of the seiyuu industry's most radiant star? But I digress. Maybe you're buying Galaxy Angel Rune to actually watch the anime, in which case, it's safe to say that this is more of the same. Look forward to a merchandise-driven, mid-budget effort that's one part genre experiment and three parts goofball comedy, with varying levels of success.

The genre experiment on this disc happens to be one episode out of the four: a horror-mystery where the Angels are picked off one by one by a ghostly predator. Yes, it's pure B-movie formula, but compared to the shallow storytelling elsewhere in the series, this is near-masterpiece material. In the absence of good original content, it's safer to just copy what already works in the genre: suspenseful pacing, a puzzling plot, one-by-one elimination, and the use of technology as a horror element. Creepy phone calls? Internet rumors? Instant winner! The entire episode is such a departure from the rest of the series that even though it doesn't take itself too seriously, it's still worth it just to follow the story and see where it leads.

The three other episodes, on the other hand, are completely predictable in where they lead: cute girls doing dumb things which are supposed to be funny, except sometimes they're not. Nano-Nano's brief stint as an idol is a clear example of "not", as the musical stage performances and the Troupe's attention-grabbing hijinks all fall flat. (Why is it that no anime can do a funny take on idol music, anyway? Is it because the genre is inherently absurd?) The upcoming visit from the original Angel Troupe results in some better comedy material, with each character going to extremes to improve themselves: beauty-conscious Kahlua resorts to alchemical sorcery for the perfect makeup, Nano-Nano tries to become the ultimate nanomachine by mecha-combining with every creature in the universe, and so on. Even Milfeulle and friends manage to squeeze in some absurdity as they try to make their way to the space station. The last episode on the disc, featuring Anise's "trade a paperclip into a house" trick and nouveau-riche indulgence, falls somewhere in between the others: not exactly a constant stream of humor, but still energetic enough to succeed at times.

The series' visual quality might be described in the same way as the story and humor: about half-decent half the time. Viewers who enjoy bright colors, sharp lines and simple shapes should be easy to please, but those with more exacting standards will be disappointed. There is no subtlety or grace to the misadventures of the Troupe: every pratfall goes directly from one extreme pose to the next; every act of comic violence can be reduced to a couple of repeating frames. Fortunately, a handful of other visual tricks help to cover up the cheap animation: the horror episode makes frequent use of a grainy filter, while Anise's celeb lifestyle involves lots of wacky faces and super-deformity. The main character designs, although not immediately striking, at least have enough variation to tell apart; however, side characters and backgrounds (especially crowds) show obvious signs of cutting corners.

Music is another aspect where the production quality is limited: most of the soundtrack involves jaunty pop instrumentals that only exist to accentuate just how wacky the Angels are. The only departure from that is the horror episode, which relies on more traditional orchestration to achieve its creepy atmosphere. If they can go all out with episodes that are "different," why not put more effort into the regular material as well? In any case, the theme songs probably the most accurate indicator of what the series is about: high-speed, hyperactive bubblegum, with little lasting value but catchy while it's there.

But as the show moves forward, it loses sight of its ideals, becoming bogged down in the non essential experiences of secondary characters and contrived exploits at school. It leaves love a little too far behind, grinding the growth of its characters to a near halt. The friends and family of the protagonists, earlier used so skillfully to build Yukino and Arima's characters instead become the focus, much to the show's discredit.

As this final volume begins, it is clear that His and Her Circumstances is a show looking to rediscover its meaning. Where it started with a clear focus on the love developing between two people, and expanded into a commentary on its impact on the characters lives, the show now attempts to come full circle. Their characters firmly developed, Yukino and Arima look to contextualize their relationship by filtering it through their respective lives. They begin to take stock of how they have developed over the course of the show. Each must decide the role the other plays in their lives—what shape their mutual investment might take. This is an essential development, one that finally gives meaning to the entire scope of the show, while demonstrating to the viewer just how far these characters have come. Always dependent on the mindset of others, Yukino, for all her brashness, starts the show timid and insecure, looking for praise as a confirmation of her existence. By the time the credits roll on the final episode, she is confident, open and free. Love is all the confirmation she needs. Arima initially comes off as a bit of a loner, living deeply within himself while leveraging his success as a means of thanking the kindness of his (adoptive) parents. He ironically ends up finding himself through Yukino, discovering a sense of satisfaction through her understanding. Their love lies at the core of his being.

This same sentiment applies to His and Her Circumstances' aesthetics as well. Those following the series are no doubt aware of its low budget nature, with many scenes being reduced to little more than colored manga stills with overlaid voice work. To make up for its lack of clean, fluid animation, Gainax has thrown in a lot of variety. Full of dramatic close-ups, frantic chibi action, and tons of descriptive onscreen text, the show's look is similar to the classic Kodomo no Omocha. Some may find a few of the scenes on this disc to be a bit much, however, with their penchant for not coloring the less important characters in any given scene, and a bizarre bit of stick figure hijinks later on. All told this is mostly standard shoujo fare, with a bit of extra personality and some nice character designs to sweeten the deal.

Bringing the entire package together is TRSI's typical excellent localization. Those that prefer to stick to subs will find options to either sub merely the dialogue, or every little thing that appears on the screen. Dub fans are once again treated well with TRSI going so far as to redo the episode previews with the English voice actresses for Tsukino and Kano. Some may have problems with Arima's voice sounding slightly too deep and mature, but the overall energy of the show is well preserved.

Though its style is certainly manga-influenced, 12 Days would more accurately be called manwha or perhaps even OEL, as creator June Kim is a Korean transplant to New York City. Best-known for her work as a cartoonist and illustrator on album covers and for various magazines, the one-shot 12 Days represents her first full-fledged graphic novel. The narrative ability she shows here suggests that you can expect more of her graphic novels to see publication in years to come.

The premise may be creepy, but it is derived from ancient Greek history and supposedly based on a real-life story Ms. Kim was once told. At its heart it is a story about trying to find a way to cope with a devastating loss, one made all the more painful by the fact that the heroine was just getting over losing her former lover to marriage at the time that it happened. As the days and chapters progress the narrative mixes in flashbacks to assorted points in the relationship of Jackie and Noah, gradually showing how the roots of their relationship go back to their teenage years, how close they were, and the circumstances of their break-up. This isn't done in any sort of chronological order, so it takes some effort (and probable rereads) to piece the whole story together, and there are critical story points which could be missed if one isn't careful. Some of the time frame switches aren't clarified, either, which obfuscates things further.

Those are the only significant flaws in what is otherwise a very well-written story, however. Dialogue, behaviors, and relationships all feel credible enough, and the story neither dodges nor overly emphasizes that the central relationship involves lesbians. Though the gay factor does complicate certain family matters, the other circumstances present here could just as easily apply to a hetero relationship, so not dwelling too much on that aspect is as it should be. The manga influences on the writing can be seen most clearly in the oft-comical asides, which might seem incongruous in such weighty subject matter but serve well to offset the gloomy overtones.

Ms. Kim's character designs do a fine job of portraying appealing, realistically mature characters; they even, to an extent, depicts variations due to racial features without resorting to caricature. Background art is less detailed and more sporadic, and shading effects and patterns depend heavily on CG effects. The manga influence can be seen here in the occasional use of superdeformed art and similar effects, although such tricks aren't used heavily. Although word balloons do make it clear who is saying what, the way the dialogue is printed in the balloons leaves a bit to be desired. It's clear and easily-readable, but also clearly typed rather than hand-written, which can be disconcerting for those not used to it.

Let me make this statement before I continue: just because it says that a DVD is "uncut" doesn't necessarily mean it is unedited. The dub track on this DVD is the same edited dub track you will find on the VHS dub release. The only difference is that no scenes have been removed. In short, the English dub script is quite different from the subtitle script. However, even when you ignore the hacked script these actors have to work with, the voice acting still comes across as sub-par. Terri Hawkes (the voice of Sailor Moon) turned in a particularly lackluster performance. One of her lines "Silver Crystal, protect us in the name of the Moon" is a good example. This statement could be interpreted as either a command or a plea. Hawkes uses a commanding voice, but raises the pitch at the end of the line as if she were asking a question. This is just one of many examples of poor voice acting in the dub.

I find music to be one of the most important aspects of any production. Luckily, the musical score in this movie does not disappoint. Takanori Arisawa skillfully mixes brass and bass instruments to create a sense of excitement or danger. String instruments, especially the piano, add a melancholy atmosphere to scenes where sad memories are remembered. In all, the background music does an excellent job in setting the scene. The musical numbers that are sung are also very well performed, and you may find yourself humming them when you're done watching. The Japanese opening, Moonlight Densetsu, is cheerful and full of hope. The English opening (I don't think it has a title other than The Sailor Moon Theme) is upbeat and peppy. Moon Revenge is played on both tracks during the battle to return to Earth. This song is filled with energy and excitement. Wonderful!

The actual DVD itself is also stuffed with a nice assortment of extras, most of them gathered from the Japanese release of the series. Among these is a featurette containing actor commentary by Ayako Kawasumi and Fujiko Takimoto, the Japanese voices for Mahoro and Suguru, respectively. Both women sit down and chat about their impressions of the series, talking over their favorite scenes, how they think their characters changed over the course of the season, and the scenes between their two characters that they thought were the most impacting. While this feature isn't particularly useful, it's still a fun item to have. The disc also includes a set of Japanese trailers for the series and a color art gallery. The latter is comprised of mostly screenshots and the images that were used for the mini-poster and covers. Sadly, many of the screenshots are rather blurry and don't sport the high resolution of the series at all. The cover images are also rather small and faded, rendering this image gallery feature rather meaningless.

Of course, while the addition of trivial things like galleries and paper doll outfits may be a fun surprise for purchasers of the DVD, the main reason to buy it is the disc content itself. In this aspect, the third volume of Mahoromatic is definitely the high point of season one and a good reminder of what Gainax can do when it puts its mind into it. The final battle between Mahoro and Ryu-Ga is dished out within the last three episodes, interceded with long-winded flashbacks and a sequence of dreams that that vaguely reminisce of the last two episodes of Evangelion in the way that they're presented, and also the voicing effects that are used (i.e. echoes and crowded vocal layovers timed a certain way). This is a far cry from the normally light-hearted and largely perverted episodes that preceded this volume, and it does very well for the show. Regrettably, even with all the action and suspense that was building up, the actual climax of the battle is a bit unsatisfying. Regardless, the emotions that are revealed afterwards do much to further the character relationship development between Mahoro and Suguru, one reason why the ending is as oddly satisfying as it is.

Wrapping up at episode twelve, the third volume of Mahoromatic concludes the first season of Gainax's popular series. Whereas almost the entire series up until this point had been filled with largely random and cheerful scenes, these last four episodes are laced with the ache of the past and the agony of having to decide between duty and personal desire. To give justice to this set of episodes, Pioneer showed their marketing finesse and presented fans with a release that follows their traditional trend of just knowing how to come up with an impressive DVD package.

Weighing in with a fan-pleasing heaviness, the DVD comes with the paper-doll outfit inserts that graced the first two Mahoromatic discs. With seven sheets of different outfits ranging from the cute to the decidedly sketchy, casual and perverted fans alike can enjoy dressing up the Mahoro and Shikijo punchouts that came with the first volume. Amusingly enough, two of the sheets let you dress up Mahoro as Evangelion's enigmatic Rei, and the teacher as the rambunctious Asuka. Whether fans choose to take this as an amusing sign of Gainax's good humor, or as an uncanny confirmation of all their musings about the allegorical similarities between the characters, it's still one of the highlights of the inserts. In addition to the doll outfits, Pioneer also put in one of the regular episode-listing inserts featuring a mini-poster of the characters in skimpy swimsuits. As if the fanservice wasn't emphasized enough, the DVD cover flips over to reveal an alternate picture of Mahoro plopped down on a cushion wearing nothing but an apron, satisfying all the fans who want to make their anime shelf look like a porn collection.

Naturally, being guided by the talented hand of Gainax, the action-packed storyline is only enhanced by the visuals. The artwork is clean and crisp, and the backgrounds are beautifully drawn. The part that deserves the most praise, however, is the props used, namely the weapons. If there is one thing that Gainax has fun with (besides drawing breasts), it's drawing guns. The weapons used in Mahoromatic are not only accurately scaled, but also incredibly detailed, which deserves a gigantic thumbs up. Accompanying the firepower, the action scenes are fluidly animated, with the feeling of movement well portrayed through the impressive stills. However, when the characters aren't in a form of skirmish of some sort, the animation takes on a more sluggish form. For example, when the characters are on a regular everyday outing, the animation will start to get chunky to conserve the budget.

One thing that the production didn't skimp on, though, was the voices. The Japanese voices are remarkably done, with every character nuance being carried out to the fullest detail. The action sequences are especially well done, with the characters able to scream and yell without it seeming like they're restraining themselves at all. This is also where the English dub excels. During casual scenes, some of the female voices sound forced, especially Mahoro's, whose high-pitched squeaking tries too hard to be cute. When the fights break out though, the naturalness of the scenes comes out. The secondary male characters are the exception, though, performing splendidly every time. The actor for Ryu-Ga and Slash, in particular, are amazing, and give just the right masculine punch to their roles. Annoyingly, the voices can't actually be identified, as the actors are listed in the credits without their role names next to them. Unless viewers are very familiar with all of the actors' voices, then, there's no other way to figure out who is who.

What Funimation calls “Season 3” constitutes episodes 62-92, the period covering the conclusion of Goku's exploits involving the Red Ribbon Army and associates up through the quarterfinals of the second World Martial Arts Tournament arc. Significant events in this span include bringing Yamcha back into the picture as a regular cast member and disciple of Master Roshi's school (which seals his long-term association with Goku), the complete defeat of the Red Ribbon Army (which sets the stage for the Android Saga in Dragon Ball Z), the apparent final defeat of the assassin Tao Pai Pai (we'll see him again in DBZ, albeit briefly), and Goku getting his tail broken off for the first time, but the most important events in this span are the introduction of three characters who will continue to have prominent presences long into DBZ: the fortunetelling witch Baba, the three-eyed future Z Fighter Tien Shinhan, and Tien's regular companion Chaiotzu. Like many of those who will become Z Fighters, the latter two do, of course, start off as ruthless bad guys, and this set does not last long enough to see them get won over to the side of light. Still, it can be fun to go back and look at how these characters started out and reflect on how they later changed, and the groundwork for those changes is being laid here.

While the Red Ribbon Army/Tao Pai Pai business does have a suitable level of thrills and there are a few good jokes scattered here and there throughout, the highlights of the set are unquestionably the Yamcha/Tien Shinhan and Krillin/Chiaotzu duels in the World Martial Arts tournament quarterfinals matches. These duels represent Dragon Ball's action component at its finest, with fists and legs flying furiously as characters zip around, beat each other up, dodge attacks, and throw out exotic powers. A bit of this exhilarating spirit is achieved in the later duels at Baba's residence, Goku's earlier duel with Tao Pai Pai, and a brief run-in that Goku has with Tien prior to the WMAT, but only in those duels does the series truly capitalize on its potential and promise as one of anime's premiere martial arts action series. The rest of the fighting leading up to those duels seems like kiddie fare by comparison.

Unlike with later DBZ airings and releases, these episodes have always retained the original soundtrack, complete with all of the cartoonish sound effects and musical gimmicks. While this does the job for the content being shown, it also more firmly entrenches the series as kiddie-oriented fare. The series maintains the same opener and closer throughout this run, with the English versions (unlike with later English adaptations of DBZ) merely being remakes of the same song with English lyrics and slightly upgraded instrumentation, as per Funimation's regular dubbing practice in the early 2000s.

The English dubbing for DB has always been an issue of some contention, especially with purists, and not without reason. Funimation does the original Japanese dub no favors by leaving it in original mono audio (although it is possible that this could have been a technical limitation), but it also gives the English dub track some big plusses and minuses that, for the most part, balance out. Voice casting for Funimation's dub sounds like it was done much more to fit the characters than the original performances, which results in mostly strong casting choices as long as one is not trying to compare them to the Japanese casting. The shakiest English choice among prominent roles is Laurie Steele's gravelly rendition of the young Krillan, but Stephanie Nadolny gives Goku a more even-tempered and likable sound and Mike McFarland does a great Master Roshi. The dub's rampant use of creative accents is very hit-or-miss but certainly adds some extra flavor to the characterizations. The English script is more a rewrite than an adaptation, often resulting in characters saying things in English which are completely different from the subtitles, but this is really only a problem in places where it is used to dodge around the earthy humor in the original dialog, such as references to “taking a #1 vs. a #2,” hunting for female companionship, or making comments about Bulma and Launch's breasts. Granted, in some cases this had to be done to make the series broadcast-worthy on Cartoon Network's Toonami programming block a few years back, but one who watches the series both subbed and dubbed may find this approach to sap the series of some of its best humor and make some replacement comments incongruous with the visual reactions they draw.

The first tip-off that Telepathic Wanderers isn't your standard shojo or shounen fare is its cover art, which depicts a scantily-clad young woman drawn and posed in a more mature style than is normally seen in fare aimed at teen audiences. The picture is just a sampling of what's to come in this sexy, sophisticated paranormal drama about the life and journeys of a telepath, with an emphasis on the sexiness. That Nanase is gorgeous is actually an integral part of the storytelling rather than just typical window-dressing in this case, as her continuing efforts to deal with the barrage of lustful thoughts directed towards her by men are a regular topic (and a convenient excuse for inserting in a goodly amount of fan service, of course). Nanase claims in the story that she has conditioned herself to deal with these assaults and used them to set a very realistic self-image, but one gets the impression that the effort is wearing on her. And how does a pretty telepath who wants to keep her abilities a secret deal with the situation when those lustful thoughts turn in depraved directions?

The first volume is hardly all about that, though. Nanase also must use her telepathy to extricate herself from a very dangerous situation with a defamed former teacher and accidentally uses it to pick up on the prediction experienced by the precognitive young man, but the meat of the story comes in her encounter and bonding with the young boy, the first person she's ever run across who has an ability like hers. The telepathy may be the gimmick, but it's the human relationships which drive the story.

Telepathic Wanderers is the first manga writing effort for renowned Japanese sci-fi writer Yasutaka Tsutsui, who is pitched as “Japan's Issac Asimov” but may be better-known to diehard anime fans as the original writer of the novels on which Satoshi Kon's upcoming project Paprika is based. Although a little too emphatic at times and occasionally prone to melodrama, the writing tells a solid story with credible dialogue and character behavior. It does not in any sense have the look or feel of a sci-fi story, which is a credit to Mr. Tsutsui's talent.

Artistry for the manga is handled by Sayaka Yamazaki, an up-and-comer who is probably not yet known by American fans but will certainly attract some new attention between this project and her upcoming manga Haruka 17. Her well-defined drawings provide good detail and distinctive, realistically-proportioned character designs which capture both the beauty and the very ordinary in the story's characters. Not shading in Nanase's normally-dark hair is used to mark instances where her telepathy kicks in, an interesting and effective visual trick. Fan service is also appealingly-done, with a few bits of nudity in later chapters and numerous scenes of Nanase in undergarments in the first two chapters. The one negative on the artistic front is the way Ms. Yamazaki draws eyes. These are uniformly normal-sized eyes, but the way that they're drawn – whether it's because they're just a little too far apart or the way that they're shaped – doesn't sit quite right in many scenes. On a few occasions tricks with the eye designs are used quite effectively to highlight a panel or two, but on the whole eyes of the characters (Most especially Nanase) are disconcerting.

The premise alone should be a clear indication of what to expect: a ridiculous silly, ridiculously bloody, and generally fun little series which acts like a cross between Excel Saga and an ecchi harem romantic comedy, with a bit of Monty Python-like sensibility thrown in for good measure. It is the kind of series which can make you laugh at the central boy being gruesomely killed multiple times per episode, only to see him promptly returned to life with a magical girl-like chant of “pipiru piru piru pipiru pii.” It can make you giggle at the awful fate which awaits angels who get their halos removed. (It literally isn't pretty, which makes one wonder why angels don't do a better job of protecting their halos.) It can leave you snickering at how all of Sakura's classmates except Shizuka always seem to think the absolute worst of him, yet they do not bat an eye at an angel in their midst or fellow students running around with animal heads. It can also leave you scratching your head at topical references that would probably fly over the head of all but the most ardent Japanophile, but fortunately it does not have too many of those.

It is also anything but a clean show. The slasher movie-level gore factor quickly becomes so over-the-top that it plays about the same way as those old cartoons where a character gets blackened from something exploding in his face or pancaked by a heavy object falling on him. The content may not have any actual nudity or sex, but still offers plenty of fan service, sexual references, and even the occasional simulated sex; one scene in the final episode involving a pit and a lost bath towel is especially raunchy. It is definitely not a show for the kiddies, and the 16+ age rating on the DVD case might be on the mild side.

Like many other prominent anime sketch comedies, Dokuro-chan is divided up into half-length episodes that each have their own particular theme, with each pairing of such half-episodes getting an opener and closer. The first eight episodes, which are included on the first DVD, constitute the 2005 TV series, while the four episodes included on the second DVD are actually a second “season” of OVA episodes made in 2007, commonly labeled Bludgeoning Angel Dokuro-chan 2. Both were wisely included together on AnimeWorks' American DVD release, thus giving it the seeming of a Complete Collection. The TV series part does have at least a vague semblance of a plot, and does try to resolve it towards the end of the first DVD, but with only tepid results. The series is far, far better when aiming for humor, as shown by its recovery to initial form in the OVA episodes.

Hal Film Maker, a little-recognized company responsible for series like Princess Tutu, Aria the Animation, and Saber Marionette J, puts forth here a production effort which normally lands the series in the realm of the decidedly ordinary. Character designs are cute enough but nothing about them stands out beyond the devilish horns given to some of the angels and Zansu's gay punk roadie look. Background art is fine but nothing special, the color scheme is satisfyingly bright, and the animation is serviceable. All of the blood and gore looks more playful than scary, too. Where the series sometimes does stand out visually is in its gimmickry, and the amusing touches thrown in are not always obvious. Sure, the cut-out animal heads given to some characters cannot be missed, and the Prince Charles visual jokes are obvious, but also watch for more subtle touches like a box of chocolates wrapped up like a bondage rope job (yeah, contemplate the implied meaning of that. . .) or the way blood briefly spurts out when Dokuro bites down on a hot dog shaped like Sakura. The series has lots of little off-kilter touches like that if you look for them.

The soundtrack, which is used sparsely in some episodes, depends primarily on a small handful of recurring themes used to play up the comedy bits. The TV series opener, which shares its name with the series, is a catchy, upbeat, and cheerfully sadistic number updated only slightly for the OVA episodes. Contrarily, the closer changes completely, with the TV closer “Survive,” a sad number featuring Sabato in her shack (and be sure to keep watching after the closer at the end of the first disk), being replaced with the more light-hearted festival dance number used in the OVAs. All are sung by Saeko Chiba, the voice of Dokuro, who performs her role with such glee that it would have been hard to adequately duplicate in an English dub.

Of course, that isn't a concern since this series did not merit an English dub, which might have been helpful in some scenes since some of the dialogue jokes are too topical and others fly by too fast to catch without using the Pause button. AnimeWorks could have partly rectified this problem by including some kind of translator notes or commentary on the more obscure jokes in the series, as ADV, Funimation, and AN Entertainment have all been known to do, and the lack of any such item stands out as a glaring omission. Do not expect much else for Extras, either, as the first disk has none and the second disk includes only clean openers and closers, but AnimeWorks did at least retain the original Japanese credits, with the English translations following episode 1-2 and 7-8 on the first DVD and episodes 3-4 on the second DVD. I must also take some issue with the overly cheap design of the DVD case interior, as the flap containing one of the DVDs breaks much too easily. (Mine did not survive a well-padded mailing.)

Unfortunately, with the end of the season fast approaching, it turns out that there's precious little time for the light fantasy parody and shounen-ai goofing that made previous volumes go down so easily. Whether it's fleshing out the history of the Great Demon Kingdom, intimating dire threats against Wolfram's sanity, delving into Shori's insecurities, or hinting that all is not well with the sealing of the Originators, this volume wants to be taken seriously. And for a series where persistent lightheartedness has always been its greatest virtue, that's a problem. The attempts at emotional involvement dash themselves to pieces on a cast that, even after nearly seventy episodes, is still too weak to shoulder the burden of straight-up drama. For all of its pretense at throwing obstacles in the way of Yuri's do-gooding, the series' belief in the power of good intentions to subvert millennia of hatred and violence is laughably naive, and even were one susceptible to it, the blundering obviousness (and frequency) with which the message is delivered renders it more precious than uplifting.

If for some incomprehensible reason you forgot the series' spotty record with action and were hoping at least for some rousing battles, forget it. The animation for the two Originator battles is so heavily recycled that they might be the same battle were it not for the different lighting schemes. Animation has never been the series' forte, so trying to spice up the final arc with frequent fights—as this volume does—isn't the smartest of tactics. Magical showdowns, improvised swordfights, and mythical beast hunting abound, but are so heavily shortcutted, awkwardly animated and limply choreographed that they make director Junji Nishimura's work in Samurai Deeper Kyo look like Once Upon a Time in China.

Backgrounds, on the other hand, have always been strong, and continue to provide atmosphere and a genuine sense of the fresh, natural wholesomeness of Yuri's adopted homeland. Characters are more generic, but have a cleanness to their features and a clearness to their eyes that keeps the sizable cast of beautiful men (and women) appealing.

For a series so adept at using silence—it almost, but not quite, creates some tension during the Shori arc using oppressive silence—Kyo kara Maoh! can be surprisingly inept at utilizing Yoichiro Yoshikawa's sweeping fantasy score. Though probably not intended as a joke, the use of the awe-inspiring vocals of the Demon King theme during a showdown between a roaring ghost wolf and a flute-playing Yuri is probably the funniest thing this volume has to offer. Soaring fantasy themes burst out of the silence like guerillas from the jungle underbrush, ambushing viewers with obvious emotional appeals, while the quieter themes are wielded with the subtlety of a flyswatter upside the head. The driving pop-rock of the opening remains the score's highlight, while the easygoing closer is as pleasantly forgettable as ever.

Given the fantasy setting, the clunky script—which serves as a droning reminder of the unsuitability of grammatically-correct English for dialogue—isn't a problem in and of itself. The cast's unenthusiastic delivery of it, and the resultant loss of color and energy, however, is. That said, other than some laughable background dialogue (some of the villagers' lines in the bridge episode are belly-laugh awful), there's nothing terrible about the English version; it's simply uninspired. Some of the performances are quite good, Yuri's mother and Dark Wolfram in particular; others are less so, as with the perfectly serviceable but less drily humorous English rendition of Yuri, but no one is conspicuously miscast or outright botched. Dub fans will be fine, but fence-sitters may want to sit it out.

Gundam Seed X Astray is a sequel series to Gundam Seed Astray, which was itself a complementary set of side stories to the Gundam Seed anime series. Although Kira Yamato's name figures quite prominently into the story, neither he nor any other character from Gundam Seed actually makes an appearance here. In fact, even if one hasn't read the original Astray series, it won't take long for a reader to pick up on what's going on, as the included Character and Story Introduction is quite handy on introducing the key players and much of the plot focuses on the entirely new characters Canard Pars and Prayer Reverie. (Gods, what names!) A reader even gets a substantial bit of background on Canard, so it won't take long to figure him out and makes sense of why he has such a mad-on to find and defeat Kira. At least a passing familiarity with the Gundam Seed universe is recommended, however.

So much of the page count is taken up with action scenes and displays of various exotic Gundam models that the four full and one mini chapter actually generate very little plot or character development beyond the details on Canard's backstory. What plot does exist is very basic fare: special equipment that could affect the balance of power in the Zaft-Alliance war is stolen, with Serpent Tail and the Junkers initially finding themselves on opposite sides of the issue until all parties involved discover what it really is and what it means. Meanwhile Canard goes around trying to find Kira and fighting anyone who gets in his way – and that's it. Beyond Canard, few of the characters get much chance to establish any kind of personality; merc leader Gai and Junkers ace pilot Lowe Gear (ugh) both get a bit of emphasis, but the rest of the supporting casts are so undeveloped that keeping their names straight can be difficult.

Anyone reading this manga expecting depth, character development, or complex plotting is already operating under an ill-conceived notion of what the title is or is supposed to be, for all it's really about is the action. Half-mad fight-at-the-drop-of-a-hat Canard gives the storytelling a convenient excuse to stage lots of Gundam battles and show off all these supposedly cool Gundam designs, many of which are originals designed for this series. And maybe these models and their equipment are cool to mecha fanatics, but beyond the Hyperion's Armure Lumiere ability they are unlikely to impress anyone else. It doesn't even succeed well at the action, as who is piloting what and on which side is often very difficult to track in the assorted battles. Without the color the pilots themselves are supposedly using to identify particular mecha, the various Gundam models blend together too much. If any manga title suffers from being done in B&W rather than color, it's this one.

The character designs used by artist Kouichi Tokita are so typical of Gundam series designs that they look generic despite being relatively well-drawn; is there some rule that all Gundam pilots of a certain age have to have a certain kind of look? Background art is more detailed than normal, and heavy use is made of shading effects even when battles aren't going on in the dark of space. In some places the attempt to use varied levels of shading to differentiate parts of a Gundam's body don't reproduce well, making the various parts blend together. Every so often a romantic anime story steps aside from the mold of stock characters and story elements to produce something truly special and different. Last year SaiKano went down this path by offering a serious, intimate, and tragic look at two teen lovers struggling to maintain a relationship despite the fact that one of them was gradually losing her humanity. In so doing it became one of the most powerful, compelling, and best-written anime titles to be released in the States in 2004. This year's entry taking the “path less traveled” looks to be Koi Kaze, an intimate and mostly serious look at a potential forbidden relationship, one that involves both improperly disparate ages and incest. Though the storyline sounds like something that could have come out of an episode of Jerry Springer, delicate care is taken in showing how Koshiro starts to develop more than just familial feelings for Nanoka despite the improprieties of the situation. We see him react awkwardly, even gruffly, to Nanoka's presence in his household as he tries to sort out what he really feels towards her and desires about her, an altogether believable reaction which also neatly sidesteps the inherent creepiness of the circumstances. Although we do not get to see inside Nanoka's head as much so as we do Koshiro's, we also get a look at her reality as she adjusts to living with a brother she's never really known while leading the very ordinary life of a 15-year-old girl. The possibilities here for future developments are both intriguing and compelling, though they may make some viewers uncomfortable.

While the series could not rightfully be called a romantic comedy based on the first volume, it does have a few comedic elements. A male co-worker of Koshiro's adds comic relief as a man obsessed with having a relationship with a high school girl, while a trip to an amusement park with Nanoka does not go so well for the apparently motion sickness-sensitive Koshiro. The hyper “Next Episode” bits are also good for a chuckle or two. None of the humor involves the pratfalls and exaggerated reactions typical of romantic comediy animes, though; even when being funny Koi Kaze retains a certain degree of sensibility. A finely-shaped – and, most importantly, believable – supporting cast includes the emotional father (cheery at times, inconsolably worried at others), an ex-girlfriend who clearly still cares for Koshiro but wasn't getting the emotional investment out of their relationship that she sought, a female coworker of Koshiro's who teases him about his relationships but is also starting to put the pieces together about the odd way Koshiro has been acting lately, and a friend of Nanoka's who is so intensely interested in starting a relationship with a boy that she's riding an emotional roller coaster herself.

As great as the writing is, the artistry is a disappointment. A subdued, washed-out color scheme is used on background art which often looks like it was lifted from watercolor paintings. It frequently has a rough, unrefined look to it and is too clearly distinct from the foreground character animation. Koshiro's square-jawed character design is simple and uninteresting, as are those for many of the supporting characters, but the appealing cuteness of Nanoka's design almost makes up for it. The quality of animation is also sporadic; one gets the impression that the artistic and technical budgets were concentrated on one key character and a few key scenes while the rest was done on the cheap.

The other place Koi Kaze really shines is in its musical scoring. The gentle, piano-driven tunes flawlessly set the tone for each scene, and the musical director knows when to let the music lapse. The opener is equally pleasant, while the closer is a mix of good music (an extension of the scoring) with amateurish artistry and weak singing. On the plus side, the vocal credits list the role with both the Japanese and English voice actors at the same time, a style Geneon has sometimes used in the past, that I greatly prefer. The English vocal casting is about as close as you're going to get to sounding like the original seiyuu, with veteran Patrick Seitz (Onishi in Texhnolyze, the sophisticated Valentine brother in Hellsing) matched with newcomer Tiffany Hsieh in the lead roles and backed by a very experienced supporting cast. The quality of the English vocal performances is also a close match to the originals, which is due in part to an English script which fully retains the essential meaning of the original.

To Izumi's dismay, they discover that the filthy-rich Master of the mansion, one Yoshitaka, is a like-aged boy with perverted proclivities who lives alone so that he can do what he wants, and for him the prospect of two middle school-aged maids walking around in alluring maid outfits is a golden opportunity. While Mitsuki happily plays along, Yoshitaka coerces the feisty Izumi into complying by holding a substantial debt over her head (various expensive things tend to get destroyed when she's around, you see). A third middle school-aged girl soon joins the household when classmate Anna, who originally had a crush on Yoshitaka, develops an even stronger one on Izumi and opts to serve as a maid to be closer to her. Various antics ensue, including two rivals to Yoshitaka popping up, Izumi becoming an Internet idol, the ghosts of Yoshitaka's parents meddling in the affairs of the living, Izumi and Mitsuki's parents and little sister Karin showing up from time to time, and everyone having to deal with the girl-obsessed alligator Pochi, but always Mitsuki finds a way to resolve issues with inventive contests.

Back in 2001, Gainax explored the possibilities of a cute teenaged maid and a “little sister”-type maid living with, and working for, an orphaned middle school-aged boy otherwise living alone in Mahoromatic, so with this 2005 adaptation of the original manga by Mattsuu and Asu Tsubaki Gainax has returned to familiar territory. That this series shares several key staff members with the Mahoromatic franchise should be no surprise, given the similar basic premises and visual styles; the character designers are the same for both, for instance, and director Shouji Saeki also helmed the Mahoromatic: Summer Special and upcoming Mahoromatic: Taidama Okaeri special in addition to serving as assistant director on the second season of the TV series. Although anime, manga and gaming have long been associated with young males, the girls of Genshiken are the stars in Volume 6, with irritable Ogiue at the center of the story. It's odd to think of character development in a satirical series, but that's exactly what happens: Ogiue overcomes her self-consciousness and dresses up in cosplay after some psychological massaging. This marriage party ends up being really overzealous, with at least one member pushing the current unattached person into a relationship they really don't want. The first episode involves the obnoxious Maki trying to set up her quiet friend Shizuka, but is insisting on using the crap that never works: dating services, vending machines, blood types, and astrological signs. This, of course, results in disaster, and what ensues isn't even funny to watch. A painstakingly awkward date with a total loser -- it's just as insufferable to observe as it is to participate. The flaw in introducing any of these simulations in America (aside from a stark lack of audience) is that the dating scenario in Japan is much different than here (and in other Western societies as well, I'd imagine). There, in order to get anywhere, you have to get into a comfortable situation with the object of your affection (if at all possible), and "confess love". This is usually in the form of a stiff, nervous "I like you" (Suki da/sa/dayo/desu/etc...). If your confession is accepted, yay -- you get to meet your in-laws in a somewhat forced meeting and make plans for... well... whatever. And if you're shot down, you get to run away, leaving a trail of teardrops and flower petals behind you.

Millions of people visit the hot springs of Japan either for medicinal purposes or relaxation. Recently, an estimated 140 million people checked in at the hot-spring inn or hotels in a year in Japan.

Onsen's History
There are evidences that as far back as the 8th century, the hot springs has been in use. The Japanese have enjoyed bathing in these geothermal waters for many centuries. The 16th century feudal Lord Takeda Shigen popularized the medicinal values of the mineral springs. After battles, he and his Samurai warriors bathed in the hot springs to help heal sword wounds, broken bones, cuts and bruises. The water was also useful for relieving stress and preparing the men for the next battle.

For security reasons, Takeda and his Samurai warriors used a group of remote and secluded springs, which were called the Shigen's hidden baths. These springs presently are used by professional athletes, including sumo wrestlers and baseball players, believing that the water reinvigorate their bodies for future competitions.

Geographic Features
Studding the surface of the archipelago are some 245 volcanoes, 86 of which are still active. Japan islands which sit on top of converging lithospheric plates are areas of constant earth movements. The boundaries of these plates are regions of volcanic activities. Interacting with magma (molten rocks) or hot rocks, the groundwater is warmed and absorbs minerals. This gives rise to the mineral waters.

A 1998 study shows that there are about 2,839 hot springs in Japan. They come in different sizes, shapes and colours. For the sake of chemical classification, they have been categorized into nine by the Japan Environmental Agency.

Around the springs are beautiful natural surrounding of mountains, valleys, rivers, the seashore, and plains. You can bath under a waterfall which gives you a natural massage or in the caves where hot mineral water bubbles up from the deep recesses of the rock formations. Some springs are located on the beach while others are nested alongside rivers.

Today we went to check out the Fuji Five Lakes area which is a popular spot to take pictures of cherry blossoms with Mount Fuji as a backdrop. Two of the best places to view the combination of flowers and mountain are at Chureito Pagoda and along the northern shore of Lake Kawaguchiko.

Chureito Pagoda
April 14, 2010 - full bloom

As the cherry blossom season around Tokyo and Kyoto comes to a close, the Fuji Five Lakes area is just getting warmed up. The blossoms opened at the end of last week and the last few days of fine weather has helped them to reach full bloom today. Our first stop of the morning took us to the Chureito Pagoda which stands on a hill looking out at Mount Fuji in the distance.

The cherry trees around the pagoda were at full bloom today and the grounds were busy with photographers looking to take advantage of what might be the only day of good weather this week. During the next few days it is expected to rain off and on until the weekend and hopefully the cherry blossoms will be able to survive.

Lake Kawaguchiko
April 14, 2010 - full bloom

The northern shore of Lake Kawaguchiko offers the best views of Mount Fuji and there are many points along the water where lots of cherry trees have been planted. Some of the popular spots are near the northern end of the Kawaguchiko Ohashi Bridge and between the Kawaguchiko Art Museum and the Orgel Box Museum.

Both spots were somewhat crowded with photographers just like at the pagoda earlier, but there were plenty of blossoms, and the sky remained uncharacteristically clear rather late into the morning.

The cherry trees around the lake were at full bloom today and looked great. But as mentioned earlier, the weather is unfortunately supposed to turn cloudy with light rain until the weekend which may shorten the cherry blossom season in the Fuji Five Lakes area.

The first DVD volume of the Senkō no Night Raid television anime series will ship in Japan on June 23 with an unaired episode #0 as well as the director's cut of the first aired episode. The 0th episode is titled "Senjō no Crank Up" ("End of Onboard Filming"). The director's cut of the first episode ("Kyūshutsugyō"/"Rescue") will include about three minutes of previously unseen footage. The first DVD's extras will include a short audio drama "Shanghai Tōchaku, Shoshite," an alternate "Japanese dubbing" track in which the original cast dubs the anime entirely in Japanese instead of both Japanese and Chinese, audio commentary, a special next-episode preview, cast interviews, and the documentary-style television commercials that aired before the anime.

Guys who are really into you will be all about you when you are out. He won't break eye contact for the nearest girl walking by and he'll be checking you out while you are together. Eyes are a huge indicator of how someone feels about you and just looking into them should let you know what he's feeling.

3. He really listens to you and tries to respond back with something.

Guys that like you want you to know that they are interested in what you have to say. They will laugh at the appropriate times and respond with an appropriate comment. They will be engaged in the conversation instead of just someone you are talking to.

4. He will be attentive and he will make sure you are okay.

Whether he lets you wear his jacket when you are cold or helps you get untangled from some sticky situation he will be there for you and make sure that you are okay even when he doesn't have to.

5. He takes your side on everything.

If you and your girlfriend are arguing about something silly he will always take your side. Give him a choice between your opinion and her opinion and you'll see that he chooses you no matter what. He will put some pretend thought into it but he will know all alone what side he's on.

Review:

The Naruto movies are coming out like Irish twins. If only that meant they also came with Irish whiskey. Being hammered would at least give you an excuse for why you can't recall anything.

But no such luck. Instead of waving the question aside with a simple “sorry I was drunk,” one is forced to point with tedious predictability to the usual suspects. To implicate the pressures of maintaining series continuity in the creation of a plot that is ultimately inconsequential and in the unimaginative recycling of each character's signature jutsu. To blame the essential lack of involvement on the mechanical execution and nearly scientific predictability of every plot point: Will some nefarious scheme interfere with Naruto's mission? Yep. Will it involve powerful, ruthless ninja? Most definitely. Will bratty Hikaru warm to Naruto's unbounded enthusiasm? But of course. Will Hikaru's skill with a toy bow come in handy at some opportune, life-changing moment? You betcha. And will it all—every life lesson, teary-eyed realization, and “stunning” action turnaround—be driven home with a musical sledgehammer? Wish all you want, the answer is still yes.

The occasional mild but pleasant surprise does save a handful of scenes from vanishing in a puff of apathy along with the rest of the film. The transformation of the blubbery, blithely arrogant Michiru into a political firebrand is unusual (adults rarely seem to change in series aimed at kids), and it hinges on an awakening that is communicated purely visually, without recourse to internal monologues or self-important rhetoric. It also affords the film the chance to end its final battle with the memorable image of an obese noble hurling a partially fossilized ninja at his primary foe.

Unfortunately, the film's other visuals are fare poorly in comparison. Unlike The Legend of the Stone of Gelel, the backgrounds here are unremarkable, and the character designs are simplified past what is allowed even in the television series. The new characters are bland caricatures, and the Crescent Moon Kingdom is too familiar to add any exoticism. Counterbalancing that is a flexible attitude towards detail levels and quality control that allows for highly active, surprisingly effective action sequences on what is obviously a limited theatrical budget. Characters warp and bend as they clash at inhuman speeds, smearing perspective as they participate in the kind of cartoon brutality that convinces less critical fans of the series' adult intent.

Predictably, the English veterans of the Naruto franchise do exemplary work here, and as always the ADR script is a fine balance of fidelity, ease of flow, and free-wheeling fun (the circus ringmaster is a kick). Less predictably, English Hikaru is a decided improvement on the Japanese, and nearly every one of the new parts is expertly played, with special mention going to the urbane head of the evil ninjas.

As with Viz's other 2-disc Shonen Jump movie releases, the bulk of the extras deal with the production of the English adaptation. The audio commentary (which for once actually comments of the film) features the English version's main staff discussing their impressions of the film, while two of the video extras deal with the English cast's thoughts about working on the movie and the film's unusual (for English) use of group recording sessions. There is an interview the film's Japanese producers, but it's decidedly dull. There's also a lengthy trivia game that proves more fun than the film itself (though it is pretty easy—I managed to pull “Chunin” rank while guessing on most of the questions).

For as long as Rock Lee plows through enemies, Sakura punches holes in walls, and Naruto does his berserker thing, the film is a diverting enough scrap of fluff a la the television series' filler episodes. When the kids bond and learn for the umpteenth time the importance of friendship, the entertainment dividends decrease drastically, but so long as one's tolerance for the overt moralizing that plagues children's entertainment is high, then even that won't hurt much. Which is exactly what makes the film so bad. It inspires neither pain nor pleasure—for all the impression it makes, you may as well have spent the hour staring at a blank wall.

The Tokyo Earthquake Memorial, also called the Tokyo Memorial, has a sad history. It was founded in 1930 to commemorate the hundreds of thousands of people who lost their lives in the massive earthquake that hit Tokyo in 1923. It was then called the Tokyo Earthquake Memorial. In 1945, a series of U.S. air raids almost destroyed the city and again a huge number of people lost their lives. After the war, the name of the memorial was changed to Tokyo Memorial to commemorate the lives of the victims of both the earthquake and the air raids. The Japan Calligraphy Museum is yet another top Tokyo landmark. As the name suggests, this museum displays some of the finest works of calligraphy. The main collection here consists of more than 3,000 pieces, an enticing treat for art lovers.

The Rainbow Bridge is a two-storey structure spanning a length of 918 meters. The bridge comprises eight traffic lanes, two train lines, a beautiful pedestrian walkway, and some observation towers. Climbing Mt. Fuji is the dream of many Japanese people. They wish to climb this beautiful mountain at least once in their lives.

Mt. Fuji is the tallest mountain in Japan. Its height scales to about 12,388 feet. It is also a volcano. Mount Fuji is adored by all the Japanese people and they call it as 'Fuji-san'.

As far as its location is concerned, Fuji Mountain is about 60 miles southwest of Tokyo in Shizuoka and Yamanashi prefectures.

But, it is not safe to climb this mountain in every season. Officially, you will be allowed to climb Mt. Fuji only from July 1 to the end of August. That is the official season for climbing. During this time, all the trails get really crowded but trust me, it is best to climb Mt. Fuji at this time of the year.

However, you will always be discouraged to climb during the off season due to the bad climate.

According to the reports, it is suggested that about 3,00,000 people try to climb Mt. Fuji every year and that a number of them are foreign tourists who come to enjoy the beauty of this enormous mountain.

Depending on the elevation, the various trails are named as ten different stations. The shortest route is the Mt. Fujinomiya-Guchi Route and most of the people start climbing this route. You can go to the fifth station (go-gome) either by a car or a bus.

To reach here, you just need to take a bus from JR Fujinomiya Station in Shizuoka to Fujinomiya Shin-go-gome. It is about 2,400m.

Regular cars are not allowed to drive up to the fifth stations in August. Also, buses to go to the fifth stations are not operated regularly during the off season.

'Mountain huts' are located between 7th station and the summit. It will usually cost you upto 5,000 yen to 7,000 yen per night. Though many drinks and good quality food are sold in the huts, they are very expensive. Therefore, it is better if you bring enough water and food with you.

The trend is to start climbing Mt. Fuji in the afternoon and take rest in a hut before climbing upto the summit at sunrise.

But, many people prefer climbing at night with flashlights so that they get to the summit at sunrise.

So, pack your bags and have a safe climbing.

At that point, start to walk away and your offer will likely be accepted.

In Chinese price bargaining, if you offer a price and it is acccepted, it is considered extremely poor form to then change your mind and either decline the purchase, or start bargaining again. A deal is a deal.

The Shanghai Xiang Yang market is very crowded and the only danger is that of occasional pickpockets. Secure your valuables as you would in any other crowded urban surrounding.

Xiang Yang market shopping is one of the "must dos" for visitors to Shanghai and is a good way to spend a half day before returning home.

The website preview for the Night Raid Senko no action spy anime series has launched on Friday with a video of 15 seconds and 15 second teaser commercial television. The series will premiere in Japan next spring.

The story is set in Shanghai in 1931 when the Japanese Imperial Army was sent to the mainland due to the relatively recent First Sino-Japanese War, Russo-Japanese War and World War I. In this cosmopolitan city of intrigue there is no special military intelligence organization called "Sakurai Kikan" which has since been buried in history.

Jun Matsumoto (Persona-trinity soul-) is the address of the animators on A-1 Pictures in this series. Another Persona-trinity soul-veteran, Shinsuke Onishi (The Third: Girl with blue eyes, New Getter Robo, 009-1) is supervising the scripts. Code: Breaker and creator of Samurai Deeper Kyo manga Akimine Kamijyo created the original character design that Keigo Sasaki (Sengoku Basara, Tsubasa Tokyo Revelations) is being adapted to animation. Symphony Space Maetel ~ Ginga Tetsudo 999 Gaiden ~ composer Taro Hakase is making the soundtrack.

Yutaka Oomatsu (Blood +) is the producer of the series as the second job in the anime Chikara no venture between the broadcasting station and Aniplex TV Tokyo anime production company. (The first Anime Chikara So any work that is in January-ra-no-wo-to.)
